Introduction

The universal Ring Cycle reaches its end

As the Norns spin the threads of destiny, they comment on the events relating to Siegfried. Suddenly the mysterious the thread snaps. Siegfried bids farewell to Brünnhilde, gives her the Ring, and sets out in search of adventure. He meets Gunther and Gutrune, who give him a magic potion that makes him fall in love with Gutrune and forget Brünnhilde. He dresses up as Gunther and abducts Brünnhilde so that the real Gunther can marry her. Brünnhilde, finding herself betrayed, asks Hagen how to kill Siegfried. And by the time she realizes Hagen has been deceiving them both to obtain the Ring, it is too late. She immolates herself by riding her horse into Siegfried's funeral pyre and forgives him. Wotan and his fellow gods are consumed in the flames that destroy Walhalla. Hagen drowns in the Rhine and the Rhine Maidens recover the Ring.
