A show by Carlus Padrissa (La Fura dels Baus)

To mark the centenary of the first Liceu performance of Parsifal, a special show has been scheduled to take place in the Foyer del Liceu on 9 January at 8 pm. Cercle del Liceu is the organizer of the event, with the collaboration of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Created by the drama company La Fura del Baus out of excerpts from Wagner's opera, this multimedia show will feature scenes from some of the 108 performances of Parsifal staged at the Liceu, which will be screened along with related graphic and audiovisual materials. Baritone Christopher Robertson will sing, accompanied on the piano by Veronique Werklé.

The bass Matti Salminen, as Gurnemanz, and the legendary Catalan tenor Francesc Viñas, in the role of Parsifal, will be the stars of the audiovisual made specially for the occasion by Carlus Padrissa of La Fura del Baus. An additional attraction will be the large oven in which a baker will bake bread on the spot. The audience will have a chance to taste the bread with a glass of wine when the show is over, thus emulating one of the keys to the understanding of Wagner's opera.

Parsifal received its world premiere in 1882 at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany where Richard Wagner's main operas had been staged since 1876.

Under the composer's will, performances of Parsifal outside Bayreuth were banned until thirty years after his death. The first Liceu performance, on 31 December 1913, preceded by one and a half hours the premieres held in other European theatres, where the opera was first given on 1 January 1914.

Parsifal had been billed by numerous European opera houses for 1 January but the first official performance outside Bayreuth was the one held at the Liceu because it commenced the night before and Barcelona, at the time, was an hour ahead of the other countries.

The curtain went up at 10.25 pm on 31 December 1913 and the show concluded at 5 in the morning of 1 January 1914. Since then Parsifal has been seen at the Liceu 108 times altogether.
