The Gran Teatre del Liceu aware of the importance of the protection of the environment has implemented an Environmental and Energy Management System by which it wants to contribute to its preservation. 

The Gran Teatre del Liceu was the first European Theatre which obtained in 2004 the certification in Environmental Management System in accordance with the ISO-14001 regulaltion, fulfilling with the international standards for the environmental management systems. It also obtained the EMAS ( Ecomanagement and Audit Scheme) certification in compliance with the European regulation for the ecomanagement and audit scheme systems.

The EMAS register is a system which promotes the continuous improvement of the environmental performance of organisations. With the implementation of this Environmental and Energy Management System, the Gran Teatre del Liceu has a commitment to carry out its task with the maximum respect and use all the available tools to improve its environmental performance. 

Even though we are not a particularly polluting institution we can contribute by managing the resources in the best way possible in order to minimize the impact that may occur. 

The scope of the system concerns all those activities which are carried out inside the facilities that form the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the related environmental impacts. This system is a self-appraisal tool to measure the environmental and energy impacts related to the Theatre activity. From this knowledge, it triggers an on-going process of improvement throughout daily work to minimize these impacts. And finally, some self-control mechanisms are fixed to ensure the proper functioning of the entire system structure.
In 2011, the Liceu obtained the certification which authorizes the Energy Management System in the Liceu in accordance with the UNE-EN-16001 regulation.

This way, the Liceu joins the environmental policy and the energy policy with an Environmental and Energy Management System (SGAiE), hence, consolidating the environmental commitment and the on-going improvement in the energy efficiency.

Within this system and taken into account an Action Plan the goals are annually fixed both to improve the environmental impact in the Liceu activities and to saving and energy efficiency which are annually audited.
