A final staging
It is a new co-production of the Gran Teatre del Liceu with the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Opéra de Paris and the San Francisco Opera.
The stage direction is undertaken by one of the most renowned directors of the time, David McVicar. This new production of Adriana Lecouvreur is truly theatrical. The set is based on a replica of the Margravial Theatre in Bayreuth, a Baroque masterpiece of stagecraft.
Great voices in the Liceu
The title role in this opera has always been one of the favourite among sopranos. It is a profoundly dramatic role that provides a compelling vehicle for a singer with personality and temperament. Well-known Adrianas have been Magda Olivero, Marcella Pobbe, Renata Tebaldi, Raina Kabaivanska, Renata Scotto and Mirella Freni. The three sopranos that play Adriana Lecouvreur at the Liceu this season are Barbara Frittoli / Daniela Dessì / Micaela Carosi , and the tenors that play Maurizio are Roberto Alagna / Fabio Armiliato / Carlo Ventre.

The plot
The opera is based on the real life of the actress Adrienne Lecouvreur. Adriana Lecouvreur was madly in love with Maurizio of Saxony, the illegitimate son of the last king of Poland for whom she sacrificed everything so that he could reclaim his lost throne. Maurizio left the actress for the Duchess of Bouillon. Shortly afterwards, Adriana was found dead in somewhat mysterious circumstances, poisoned by the rival for Maurizio’s affections according to the legend.
