When Maria Vilardell, the grand-daughter of the tenor Francesc Viñas, decided in 1963 to keep her grandfather's memory alive by launching a contest to be held in Barcelona, she may not have imagined that fifty years later the event would still enjoy a firm international reputation and support from the world's leading opera houses. Its prestige attracts over fifty contestants from sixty different countries.
The concert of the 50th edition of the «Francesc Viñas» International Singing Contest will offer the opportunity to get to know the winners of this year’s main awards. The contest bears the name of the legendary tenor Francesc Viñas i Dordal (Moià 1863 – Barcelona 1933). Viñas had a supple and delicate but at the same time powerful voice which he laid first and foremost at the service of Wagner's operas. He made his Liceu debut (1888) in the work that made him famous: Lohengrin. He sang frequently at the Liceu and was the first to appear there in the role of Parsifal, on 31 December 1913.
At the end of the contest, the international jury will announce its verdict.
