Three-act opera. Libretto by Johann Friedrich Kind. Music by Carl Maria von Weber. First performed on 18 June 1821 at the Schauspielhaus in Berlin. First performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 4 August 1849.
In this traditional Singspiel, based on a popular legend with Faustian overtones, musical numbers alternate with spoken dialogue. It is set in the heart of wild, mysterious woodland. The plot tells how the devil Samiel and the wicked Kaspar try to buy the soul of the poor gamekeeper Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe. Supernatural elements and the fight between Good and Evil are expressed in the beautiful timbres of Weber’s inspired music. The devil’s theme is considered a precedent for the Leitmotiv.
