Lyric comedy in three acts.
Libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández Shaw based on Lope de Vega's La discreta enamorada. Music by Amadeu Vives. First performed on 17 October 1923 at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. First performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 7 February 1933.
Doña Francisquita, the best-known zarzuela by the Catalan composer Amadeu Vives, is considered a masterpiece of the genre.
A quintessentially romantic image of Madrid provides the backcloth to this typical comedy of intrigue. The characters and their feelings are moved by jealousy but the tale, needless to say, has a happy ending. The many very famous numbers include: «Por el humo se sabe donde está el fuego», «La canción del ruiseñor», «Soy madrileña», and the chorus «Donde va la alegría».
The score, inspired by popular music, affords the singers ample opportunities to display their talents.
