OPERA AND DANCE
Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch
Four-act opera. Libretto by François Guillard.
Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck. First performed on 18 May 1779 at the Académie de Musique in Paris. New German version first performed on 23 October 1781 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. First performance of the Viennese version at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
The second version of Iphigenie auf Tauris, of which this will be the first performance in Spain, signalled the end of Gluck's Parisian period (1773-1779), during which the famous clash between Italian opera (Piccini) and French or 'reformed' opera (Gluck himself) had taken place. It is considered one of his most perfect and brilliant operas, with a seamless blend of music and drama that makes it extraordinarily expressive. The production to be staged at the Liceu is by the great choreographer Pina Bausch.
