Four-act opera. Libretto by Jaime Salom. Music by Xavier Benguerel. Opera commissioned by the Spanish Ministry of Culture for the centenary of the birth of Salvador Dalí in 2004. First performed on 8 June 2011 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
First performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Was he mad? Mentally ill? A monster? Salvador Dalí answered such questions with one of those remarks of his that have gone down to posterity: «The only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad». But a controversial figure he certainly was, paradoxical, larger than life, and a genius, in the broadest sense of the term. And in his shadow stood the hazy figure of a calculating, inspirational woman: Gala. Xavier Benguerel (the composer of El Llibre Vermell, premiered at the Liceu in 1988) and Jaime Salom have built their opera on the complex relationship which linked these two unique individuals, the artist and his muse, for half a century. The six illustrative episodes of Jo, Dalí explore the strange bond of connivance between Dalí and Gala, a connivance that propelled them to the apex of artistic and social success. «An odd blend of love and hate», as Benguerel and Salom call it, «of blood and gall, avarice and detachment». He was a painter driven insane by his own talent, histrionic, egocentric and self-satisfied to a pathological, ridiculous degree; she was the perverse muse, the unfaithful mistress, the long-suffering wife, the lover who was both friend and enemy.
