Sacred festival drama in three acts. Libretto and music by Richard Wagner. First performed on 26 July 1882 at the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth. First performed in Spain at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 31 December 1913.
Parsifal, with its high symbolic and metaphysical contents, is the supreme expression of the idea of redemption that permeates the whole of Wagner’s output. The action takes place at the castle of Montsalvat, where a brotherhood of knight-monks, headed by King Amfortas, guard some sacred relics. Parsifal, the hero, is unaware of his origins and even his name. Then, just as he is about to be seduced by the savagely beautiful Kundry, he has a revelation: compassion has made him wise. He returns, after a long pilgrimage, with the sacred spear and is anointed king.
