This concert of Vivaldi's vocal works transports us to the world of Baroque music or, to be more accurate, to the world of Venetian late Baroque music.
Vivaldi, a great virtuoso violinist and prolific composer, wrote a vast amount of instrumental music which returned to favour in the mid-19th century, thanks notably to its associations with Johann Sebastian Bach. Less well-known, but no less valuable, are his operas, oratorios, cantatas and sacred music. In his operas — Il Tamerlano (Il Bajazet), La Griselda, Arsilda, Regina Di Ponto, Il Farnace, Ottone in Villa, L'atenaide, Motezuma, Orlando furioso, and many others — he displays an exceptional dramatic flair which enables him to portray human passions with precision and finesse while highlighting them with his extraordinary music.
