The Competition began 49 years ago in memory of Francisco Viñas, the celebrated tenor (Moià, Barcelona, 1863 -Barcelona, 1933). He sang in the most important opera houses in Europe and America and was famous as the finest Spanish interpreter of Wagner. He gave the first performance of «Parsifal» in Spain in 1913. In 1932 he published a book of great musical value, «The Art of Singing», based on his artistic experience.
