The Liceu and the US

After the reopening of the opera house in 1999 the cultural and operatic exchange between the United States and the Gran Teatre del Liceu has greatly increased.

Some of the latest examples of this phenomenon are: the direction by David Alden (New York, 1949) of L’incoronazione di Poppea and the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Fidelio (season 2008-2009); the production from L.A. Music Center Opera of Tristan und Isolde by the David Hockney and the coproduction with the Metropolitan Opera of La fille du régiment (season  2009-2010); Robert Wilson (Waco TX, 1941) directing Pélleas et Melisande (season 2011-2012) and the visit of the American Ballet Theater, the coproduction of Les contes d’Hoffmann with the San Francisco Opera and the Liceu’s premiere of the “American opera” Street scene by Kurt Weill (season 2012-13).

In addition to the Liceu’s performances and debuts of American singers such as Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Dolora Zajick, Sondra Radvanovsky, David Daniels, Bejun Mehta and others.

The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation seeks to encourage this artistic dialogue and promote the collaboration between American opera companies and the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
