A final staging It is a new co-production of the Gran Teatre del Liceu with the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Opéra de Paris and the San Francisco Opera. The stage direction is undertaken by one of the most renowned directors of the time, David McVicar. This new production of Adriana Lecouvreur is truly theatrical. The set is based on a replica of the Margravial Theatre in Bayreuth, a Baroque masterpiece of stagecraft.

The plot The opera is based on the real life of the actress Adrienne Lecouvreur. Adriana Lecouvreur was madly in love with Maurizio of Saxony, the illegitimate son of the last king of Poland for whom she sacrificed everything so that he could reclaim his lost throne. Maurizio left the actress for the Duchess of Bouillon. Shortly afterwards, Adriana was found dead in somewhat mysterious circumstances, poisoned by the rival for Maurizio’s affections according to the legend.
Opera in five scenes. Libretto by Nèstor Luján, based on the tale Le chat botté by Charles Perrault. Music by Xavier Montsalvatge. First performed on 10 January 1948 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Xavier Montsalvatge (1912-2002) composed this opera to a libretto by his close friend Nèstor Luján derived from Charles Perrault's tale Le chat botté (Contes de ma Mère l’Oye, 1697). Written during the composer's youth, it was premiered at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1948. The tale of the wily cat who wins fortune and happiness for his poor but handsome master was intended for children but Montsalvatge, instead of giving it the predictable naïf treatment, fills it with all the expertise and refinement of his musical art. The result is a beautiful, harmonious score, constructed in the most orthodox operatic tradition and radiant with his subtle irony.
Grupo Corpo, founded in 1975, has become Brazil's foremost dance troupe thanks to the unique language honed by its choreographer and director Rodrigo Pederneiras, which combines classical technique with a contemporary re-reading of Brazilian popular dance. For its first visit to the Liceu the company has chosen two titles from its extensive repertory, both created in the 1990s when it was the resident company of the Maison de la Danse in Lyon: Bach and Parabelo. The former blends the Baroque architecture of Bach's music with that of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Marco Antonio Guimarães has used the German composer's works to create a score that provides the framework for some very lively and physically strenuous dancing. In Parabelo, where these same abilities are put to good use, composers Tom Zé and Zé Miguel Wisnik have woven the rhythmic patterns of music from Bahia into a backcloth of sound to support mature, extroverted expressive movements which, when appropriate, become unabashedly joyful and explosive.
