The non profit-making organisation has been created thanks to the collaboration between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Levante Capital Partners.

THE LICEU BARCELONA OPERA HOUSE US FOUNDATION IS CREATED TO ESTABLISH LINKS BETWEEN THE GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU AND NEW YORK

Its start-up marks the beginning of the strategy of international patronage put in place by the Liceu, at no cost to the theatre.
The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation has the legal advice of Baker & McKenzie, as its first sponsor.
In Barcelona, the General Manager of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Foundation, Joan Francesc Marco, and Antoni Renom, Managing Director of Levante Capital Partners – an investment company of the Catalan Renom Arboix family – accompanied by Pilar Pifarré, General Secretary of the Department of Culture of the Catalan Government, presented the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation. The new non profit-making organisation will work from New York to establish cultural, social and economic ties between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and American civil society with the aim of reinforcing the image of the Gran Teatre del Liceu as a top-flight international institution, and of Barcelona as a city of culture, and foster the contribution of philanthropic funds from the United States to finance artistic projects by the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
The creation of the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation marks the start of the strategy of international patronage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, already planned in the theatre's last Steering Plan, in response to the need to seek new ways of collaborating with the private sector and secure new revenue due to the change in the funding model of cultural institutions.
The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation is a clear exponent of the new model based on public-private collaboration. The institution is the result of the combined efforts and desires of the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Levante Capital Partners, an international investment management specialist that, as driving force and founder member of the organisation, brings to the table its experience in capital management, its knowledge of the New York cultural and philanthropic scene and the funding required to make the organisation possible. His family's enthusiasm for opera, his historical ties with the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the conviction that civil society and private organisations have to play an active part in continued cultural growth have led the Managing Director of Levante Capital Partners, Antoni Renom, to promote and take part in the project. “We at Levante Capital Partners are convinced of the global viability of the project and the return it will get, both culturally and economically. This is why we are investing in the start-up of the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation”.
For the whole legal process, the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation has the support of Baker & McKenzie, a specialist in the internationalisation and foreign consolidation of businesses and institutions. Baker & Mckenzie, as the first sponsor, provides services and legal advice from its offices in Barcelona and New York. The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation is starting up, therefore, at zero cost to the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation follows the model of other European opera houses and festivals, such as the Opéra National in Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, the Salzburg Festival and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, which have had a non profit-making organisation in New York for years to foster opera exchange with these cities and to raise philanthropic funds.
Since the second half of 2012, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Levante Capital Partners have, with the support of Baker & McKenzie, been completing all the administrative steps needed to set up the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation as a non profit-making organisation. With this initial phase completed, the first half of this year will see the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation begin to establish itself on the ground.
In charge of rolling it out, which includes the constitution of the organisation's Board of Trustees, will be the Executive Director of the Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation, Marc Busquets, who has been working on the project since the very beginning. His practical knowledge of cultural business management, his experience in this specific field in New York and his passion for opera make him the ideal person to manage the institution, under the coordination of the future president. The Liceu Barcelona Opera House US Foundation will commence its activities in the second half of 2013.

The environmental energy commitment of the Liceu Theatre. Excellent and efficient management of the eco resources.

The EMAS Club, the organisation of associations holding, in Catalunya, the prestigious European Certificate of Environmental Audit and Management, based on the EMAS (Eco Management and Audit scheme) which counts with the collaboration and support of the General Environmental Quality Department of the Territory and Sustainability, annually organises the EMAS Catalunya awards which pretend to excel and recognise the task carried out by the organisations as well as everybody’s effort to make it possible. The present year, this entity has decided to grant THE BEST ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION PLAN EMAS AWARD to the LICEU THEATRE for its ¨2009-2015 EFFICIENT ENERGY ACTION PLAN¨. The official ceremony presided by the Honourable counsellor of Territory and Sustainability, Mr. Lluis Recoder i Miralles will be held on the 15th December.
The above mentioned Action Plan is the outcome of a well done job, the success of which is based on an entrepreneur plan which is gradually becoming a reference model due to it being a pioneer in the field, a real example of success of the collaboration between the private and the public sectors using a performance contract with the saving guarantee oriented to a financial plan of the investments in energy use efficiency and technology innovation. With this plan, the Liceu is achieving and consolidating the energy saving efficiency, and in the last year a 26% energy saving has been reported, that is to say 2.150.000 KWT per year meaning the saving of 190.000 Euros and a reduction in the emission of greenhouse effect gas of 389 TN of CO2. But the most important issue is the commitment of the whole institution and the total support of the Liceu Management, which has decidedly kept the energy environmental commitment carrying out a responsible management of the eco resources.
The recognition of an institution as the Liceu theatre is the perfect example the action of a public group, emblem of Barcelona and Catalunya for encouraging other groups or associations to carry out responsible and society committed actions.
This is undoubtedly, a group success.
“Environment is Culture and the Liceu Theatre is a means of communication.”

The Gran Teatre del Liceu: first European Theatre of Opera in obtaining the certification ISO 50.001 in Energy Management System
The Gran Teatre del Liceu has taken one step more in its commitment to sustainability, and this year 2013 has obtained the certification ISO 50.001 in Energy Management System, returning to be a pioneer as a public equipment, and being therefore the first Opera House of all Europe in reaching this distinction.
This new certification replaces the previous norm UNE-EN-16001, that the Liceu obtained in July of 2011, and is fruit of the model of environmental and energy management of the Liceu, and a clear bet by the technological innovation with sustainable funding, that already has received diverse distinctions and recognitions.
This Energy Management has given important results, reaching accumulated power savings of 40% (from December 2011), and consequently an important reduction of the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions, and on the other hand, it is also translated into important economic savings.
The obtaining of this certification ISO 50.001 will cause that the Liceu has as objectives:

The improvement of the energy efficiency, its use and power consumptions.

The promotion of the optimal practices in energy management.

Make easier the improvement of energy management for the reduction of polluting gas discharge’s projects.

To allow the integration together with Certification ISO-14001 and EMAS regulation, on the environment.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu, at the moment, has also certificates according to the Certification ISO-14.001 and the EMAS regulation obtained in 2004, and then it was also the first European Opera Theatre of Opera in obtaining these certifications. All this certificates, with the ISO 50.001 are integrated within the Environmental and Energy Management System of the Liceu (SGAIE)
This way it’s totally consolidated the environmental and energy commitment and the continuous improvement in the energy efficiency, the management of residues, the management of waters of the subsoil, among others important aspects that characterize the Environmental and Energy Management System of the Liceu
