- Dudamel will conduct the Liceu Symphony Orchestra and an impressive cast featuring Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Ludovic Tézier and Okka von der Damerau.
- Víctor Garcia de Gomar's artistic project also has other recent confirmations for upcoming seasons, such as Anna Netrebko's recital in January 2021 and The Magic Flute, conducted by Dudamel and starring Javier Camarena and Nuria Rial.
Barcelona, 1st September 2020. The Gran Teatre del Liceu will bring two of the most important figures in international opera together for the first time: Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel and Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. This will happen on October 1 and 4, 2020, with the first concert-version opera of the 2020/21 season, Verdi’s Il trovatore, which will also feature the magnificent voices of Ludovic Tézier, Yusif Eyvazov and Okka von der Damerau.
Dudamel will perform at the Gran Teatre del Liceu for the first time, and it is also his debut with this Verdi opera. For the Venezuelan conductor, it is “tremendously exciting to be able to step onto the stage of such an emblematic theatre, where so many outstanding figures have offered magical nights, and work with its orchestra. This is the theatre of Montserrat Caballé, Josep Carreras, Jaume Aragall... Being able to collaborate for the first time with Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Ludovic Tézier is a dream in itself and, on the other hand, to debut Il trovatore is something I have wanted to do since I was a child. I would like to thank the theatre and especially its artistic department for the effort they have made to make this possible.”
For his part, artistic director Víctor Garcia de Gomar says: “The Liceu sent out a message in a bottle. The answer was clear: ‘Yes, I do’. A very fruitful professional and personal relationship that enables us to open the doors of the theatre to receive one of music’s biggest celebrities and one of its most charismatic conductors. With his unquenchable energy, Gustavo Dudamel joins a fantastic cast, promising a very special evening. A love letter answered with an Il trovatore, which already has The Magic Flute for a second chapter. Hurricane Dudamel is the magnet that will conquer the hearts of the Liceu's audience and illuminate an historical and unforgettable page in the theatre's history.”
The confluence of Gustavo Dudamel and Anna Netrebko on the stage of the Liceu is another step toward the consolidation of an artistic project through which Víctor Garcia de Gomar wants to bring together the best voices, batons and stage directors on the international scene during upcoming seasons. Netrebko will return in January 2021 with the intimate recital Jour et nuit, while Dudamel will be back over the next few seasons with Mozart's The Magic Flute, starring Javier Camarena in the role of Tamino and with the much-anticipated debut of Nuria Rial as Pamina.
