El Liceu i la inclusió

Liceu joins 'TRACTION' to bring opera to people in vulnerable contexts through the technological innovation

Recently, the Gran Teatre del Liceu has launched the Community production line Opera Prima, which will give rise in November 2021 to the first newly created opera performed with the residents of the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona. In this context and based on the Opera Prima line, TRACTION was born as a Research and Innovation project financed by the European Commission under the call H2020 DT-Transformations-11-2019: Collaborative approaches to cultural heritage for social cohesion.

First official meeting of the Traction team in Donosti- February 2020.

TRACTION - Opera created for social transformation - is a project born of the understanding between different European partners grouped in a consortium with the mission of bringing opera to people at risk of exclusion through technological innovation. With this common objective and under the leadership of the Basque Foundation Centro de Tecnologías de Interacción Visual y Comunicaciones Vicomtech (VICOM), the Liceu and eight partners from five European countries have set to work to make this premise a reality.

The diversity of profiles in areas such as university research, technological innovation or ethical commitment, allow the combination of OPERA and COMMUNITY from a polyhedral perspective, beyond the purely artistic perspective. TRACTION intends therefore that Opera can be enjoyed and lived from the opening of formats, of participants and creators and of changing and innovative experiences.

Experiences that will materialize in three well-differentiated projects: In the case of the Liceu, and returning to Opera Prima, the technology will allow, thanks to itinerant digital elements, to get to know the back stage of the opera ravalera and will provide longevity to the project, once the two performances to be held at the Liceu in November 2021. As for Ireland, with the Irish National Opera at the forefront, the immersive digital opera to be created will enable people from the most depopulated and isolated regions of the island enjoy a unique operatic project. And Portugal, under the leadership of the Sociedade Artística Musical dos Pousos (SAMP) and the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, will carry out a co-creation project with inmates of the Leiria prison where digital capsules will provide a dissemination beyond the penitentiary limits .

As long as the TRACTION project lasts, thanks to technological innovation, community dialogue will be sought from fertilization activities that will be crossed between different countries and that will seek the empowerment of people who rewrite the operatic event.

Started in January 2020 TRACTION has an expected duration of 36 months.
