Òpera XXI

Opera XXI is an association of theatres, festivals and regular opera seasons in Spain. It  was promoted by the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Madrid's Teatro Real with the following objectives:

  • To achieve an open and participatory cultural model for opera in line with 21st century requirements and audiences.
  • To increase and foster operatic activities by disseminating them through the use of the new technologies and by creating new audiences.
  • To promote synergy among its members in order to improve the management and utilization of available resources.
  • To encourage a commitment among its members to artistic and technical excellence.
  • To encourage co-productions among members.

On 12 February 2005, the Teatre Principal in Maó, Spain's oldest opera house, provided the venue for the association's founding meeting. Originally set up by 20 theatres, festivals and seasons, it currently has 32 members.
