Barcelona, February 26, 2024. The Belgian-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents a double program Faun/Noetic at the Gran Teatre del Liceu leading the company he directs, the prestigious Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. In Faun, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui unfolds all the eroticism of L'après-midi d'un faune, the mythical revolutionary choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky.

On the other hand, Noetic is a geometric and playful exploration around the straight line and the circle, a group work that features collaboration with the visual artist Antony Gormley. With this program, the Liceu kicks off an exuberant dance season that includes major companies: the Dortmund Ballet, Sasha Waltz & Guests, and the Ballet dell'Opera di Roma, which will close it with the classic Swan Lake.

The next dance event at the Gran Teatre del Liceu marks the premiere of Alexander Ekman's celebrated ballet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the Dortmund Ballet, from April 25th to 28th in five performances. This is a contemporary dance version that moves away from the Shakespearean imagery to delve deeper into the Nordic mythological aspect of the tale.

Ekman explores the energy generated at the summer solstice and delves into all the earthy essence and mystery of this natural passage. The Swedish choreographer created this ballet for the Royal Swedish Ballet, and it premiered with great success in April 2015. Since then, it has established itself as one of his most magnetic and powerful works, a choreography that unfolds visually stunning tableaux.

From July 6th to 10th, it's the turn of the renowned contemporary dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests, presenting a contemporary version of one of the milestones of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Le Sacre du Printemps, with music by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky, premiered on May 28th, 1913, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Waltz's version, Sacre, has also become a classic of contemporary dance, exploring the ritualistic dimension of dance in an organic proposal of great kinetic force.

The program will be completed by two more pieces: Feune, Waltz's version of Debussy's L'après-midi d'un faune, and the Scène d'amour from Hector Berlioz's Roméo et Juliette. In Feune, Waltz respects the spirit of Nijinsky's original choreography, emphasizing the erotic dimension of the mythological creature and the sensuality of the nymphs, while in Scène d'amour, the choreographer explores the feelings of the two teenagers, embroidering passages of extreme sensitivity, yet clouded by the tragic fate that awaits them. For this occasion, the resident conductor Josep Pons will lead the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The season will close grandly with a formidable Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with choreography by Benjamin Pech, performed by one of the most prominent international companies of the moment, the Ballet dell'Opera di Roma, from July 19th to 23rd. A classic among classics and an aesthetic ideal that continues to enchant an audience eager for beauty in the digital age. Benjamin Pech's version, a former Étoile dancer of the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris, is respectful of the original and accentuates the most fantastical aspect of this work, with a majestic staging.
