La torre dels somnis, a new production with the hallmark of Lluís Danés

Barcelona, May 22, 2024

The new large-scale show 'La torre dels somnis', a stage proposal by Lluís Danés, is a new production of the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Barcelona City Council that combines opera, circus, and poetry. A musical journey full of emotion, sensitivity, and magic guided by Puccini.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Barcelona City Council join forces to co-produce La torre dels somnis, a show that mixes circus, opera, and poetry and can be seen at the Sala Gran of the Gran Teatre del Liceu on June 1, 22, 23, and 29. The show bears the hallmark of stage director Lluís Danés and the musical direction is by Sergi Cuenca, who has also written the musical arrangements based on Puccini's work. Ingrid Esperanza signs the circus direction and Ariadna Peya the choreographic direction..

La torre dels somnis is a large-scale musical journey where the operatic part is built on Puccini's work while the circus part will feature more traditional acts of this performing art: balances, rope, suspensions, trapeze, and dance. On stage, there will be six circus performers and live music performed by eight musicians and five singers. This project is supported by the Ferrer Salat Foundation and the Conservatori del Liceu Foundation, aiming to promote the participation of young musicians and creators from the Higher Center of the Conservatori Liceu Foundation.

La torre dels somnis

An operatic proposal with music by Puccini and a dramaturgy that, valuing dreams and utopias, poetically narrates the final challenge of reality against the impossibles that inhabit the tower. A tower full of light emerging from the darkness. La torre dels somnis, a place where everything is possible, a corner of the world where you don't need to sleep to dream.

A show for all ages that aims to reach adolescent and young audiences in a special way with the strength, risk, and emotion emanating from the fusion of opera and circus, and a dramaturgy with which they can identify.

In the words of Lluís Danés, "the show seeks to vindicate the constant search for one's path, showing how shipwrecks are an essential part of learning. Through difficulties, the idea is reinforced that what matters is to try, as each attempt brings new perspectives and strengths. The struggle for dreams and resilience become central values, inspiring the audience to persevere despite obstacles."

Sergi Cuenca, in charge of the musical part, explains that "La torre dels somnis seeks to find a different language while maintaining Puccini's essence. The modern sound, with percussion, synthesizers, keyboards, vocal solos, and choirs, offers a contemporary experience without losing the emotional depth characteristic of Puccini. This approach creates a choral, innovative show faithful to the soul of the Italian composer."

The dramaturgy created by Lluís Danés and Alguer Miquel focuses on essential values such as effort, overcoming obstacles, and resilience, as well as the importance of teamwork and trust. Additionally, the opera, with a selection of Puccini's arias, connects with deep emotions that young people can understand and empathize with.

La torre dels somnis will be seen by a total of 5,850 young people in five school performances, while the four family performances expect to attract around 8,000 people of all ages.
