Diego Matheuz is one of the most prominent conductors of his generation and a key figure to emerge from Venezuela’s El Sistema. He has served as Principal Conductor of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and has held notable positions such as Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Mozart in Bologna (at Claudio Abbado’s invitation) and of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Since 2022, he has been Principal Conductor of the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra in Tokyo. His international engagements include appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Paris Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Arena di Verona, among others. In the symphonic field, he has collaborated with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the La Scala Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Israel Philharmonic.
Deeply committed to music education, he continues to work with young musicians in Venezuela and co-directs the MACH project in Italy, which offers high-level training to young talents from around the world. His conducting is noted for its energy, musical depth, and strong connection with new generations of artists.
He made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 2014/15 season with Don Pasquale.
