A 'Lucia di Lammermoor' to experience up close
An intimate and contemporary version of Donizetti’s masterpiece that brings bel canto closer to today’s audiences.
Òpera Garatge has built, over the years, a singular space within the contemporary operatic landscape: a territory of risk, proximity and experimentation in which opera recovers its original condition as a living, direct and deeply human art form. Together with the Gran Teatre del Liceu and with a perspective that moves away from monumentalism to embrace dramatic essence, they foster a dialogue with new audiences without renouncing artistic rigour.
On this occasion, the project begins a particularly significant collaboration with the Gran Teatre del Liceu to develop a pocket version of Lucia di Lammermoor, one of the most emblematic works in the repertoire. This alliance builds a bridge between the historic institution and a flexible creative device, capable of rethinking the classics from a contemporary sensibility.
This reading of Lucia di Lammermoor focuses on the fragility of bodies and souls, the turbulent intimacy of emotions, and the violence—both explicit and symbolic—of the social conventions that surround Lucia. Donizetti’s bel canto emerges stripped of superfluous ornament and reveals a music of relentless psychological intensity, in which each vocal phrase becomes both intimate confession and irreparable crack, a prelude to a madness that is not weakness, but the tragic consequence of a world that denies desire and freedom.
This collaboration with the Liceu highlights young singers, performing here in the leading roles, drawn from initiatives in the city such as the Conservatori del Liceu, the ESMUC, the Tenor Viñas Competition, Life Victoria, and the Bach Scholarships of the Fundació Salvat, among others.
This approach not only broadens the scope of the project but also reaffirms a shared conviction: that opera, revisited with intelligence and sensitivity, remains a powerful mirror of our contradictions, capable of addressing us with a deeply moving relevance.
