The return of Roberto Alagna to the Liceu with a unique tribute to Puccini
Roberto Alagna, the French tenor of Italian origin and a living legend on the world’s stages, returns to the Gran Teatre del Liceu with a historic recital that will captivate audiences through a remarkable program devoted entirely to the music of Giacomo Puccini. The recital, taking place on Thursday, October 30, will feature internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Jeff Cohen. Cohen has collaborated with artists such as June Anderson, Angela Gheorghiu, and Measha Brueggergosman, with whom he has performed three recitals at the Liceu during the 2002-2003, 2003-2004, and 2010-2011 seasons.
This recital will be a true display of vocal artistry, featuring some of the most demanding arias by the great composer. Alagna, celebrated worldwide for his vocal mastery and his passionate interpretations of major operatic roles, is a devoted admirer of the composer from Lucca, whose melodies have left an indelible mark on the operatic repertoire.
The tribute to Puccini aims to capture the essence of his music while showcasing Alagna’s versatility, as he masterfully interprets both powerful and delicate roles — from the passionate Nessun dorma in Turandot to the most moving arias from Madama Butterfly, Tosca and La bohème, as well as early works such as Le Villi and Edgar, revealing his deep emotional connection to the music.
With his commanding voice and charisma, Alagna will perform a program of exceptional vocal challenge, testing the technique, control, and expressive depth of his remarkable instrument.
Tenor Roberto Alagna made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 1991-1992 season performing the title role in Puccini’s La bohème, and that same season as Alfredo Germont in Verdi’s La traviata. Since then, he has become one of the Liceu’s most beloved tenors, performing in Aida by Verdi (2007-2008); Carmen by Bizet (2010-2011); Adriana Lecouvreur by Cilèa (2011-2012 and 2023-2024); Madama Butterfly by Puccini (2012-2013); the double bill Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni and Pagliacci by Leoncavallo (2019-2020); as well as in the concert L’ànima del Liceu during the 2011-2012 season.
