We continue with our series of talks The Interiors of the Liceu, which we started a couple of seasons ago to gain a closer look at the secrets of a theatre beyond the stage. On this occasion, we would like to invite you to a meeting with the General Director, Valentí Oviedo, and the Technical Director, Xavier Sagrera, who will talk with our President, Jaume Graell, about the future project of the Liceu Mar space and about the Theatre’s overall operations.
Valentí Oviedo (Manresa, 1977) holds a degree in Business Administration from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), an MBA from IE, and a PDD from IESE, and has significant experience in managing cultural institutions.
He is currently the General Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, a position he has held since being appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Foundation on March 22, 2018, and has been a member of the Opera Europa Board of Directors since 2021.
He began his professional career in the areas of finance and marketing at multinational companies in the industrial and consumer goods sectors. However, due to his connection with culture and the arts, he went on to direct, between 2008 and 2013, the municipal company Manresana d’Equipaments Escènics, responsible for managing the Teatre Kursaal and the Teatre Conservatori de Manresa.
In 2013, he was appointed Manager of the Auditori and OBC Orchestra Consortium, making a notable and recognized contribution to the improvement of the organization. He held this position until July 2016, when he was appointed Manager of the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB). He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Creativity of the Barcelona City Council.
In 2025, Valentí Oviedo was awarded the distinction of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an honor granted by the French Ministry of Culture that recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to the arts, literature, and the promotion of French culture internationally.
He has collaborated as a lecturer in finance and marketing at the Master’s in Cultural Management at the University of Barcelona (UB), and has been a member of the board of the Association of Cultural Managers of Catalonia and the Cultural Association El Galliner. He currently serves on the Board of the Josep Mestres Cabanes Foundation (June 2022), is a member of the Board of Espurnes Barroques (since its establishment in May 2021), a member of the Board of the Banc de Sabadell Foundation (January 2023), part of the Advisory Committee on Creativity of the Barcelona City Council (November 2023), a member of the University Advisory Council of UIC (July 2024), and a member of the Board of the Opera de Catalunya Foundation (December 2025).
Xavier Sagrera is an engineer and a professional specialized in stage technology. He is the Technical Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, where he coordinates and oversees all technical areas related to the production of performances, including set design, stage machinery, lighting, sound, and safety.
With extensive experience in the performing arts sector, he has led multidisciplinary teams and participated in the realization of numerous opera productions and special theatre projects. Committed to innovation and technical excellence, he actively contributes to the development and modernization of the Liceu’s stage processes.
