Glasgow-born McVicar studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. One of the most lauded stage directors throughout the world, he made his mark at the Liceu with his versions of Manon (2006/07 season), Adriana Lecouvreur (2011/12), Agrippina (2013/14), La traviata (2014/15) and especially Andrea Chénier (2017/18), starring Jonas Kaufmann, Sondra Radvanovsky and Carlos Álvarez. Productions of his are regularly staged in opera houses in London, Chicago, Milan, Paris, Brussels and elsewhere, and at the Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne Festivals.
